Before you begin

Identify the surface and follow the current instructions for your exact products. Do not sand or strip uncertain old coatings. Read the safety guide before disturbing materials.

Dry and cured are different

Touch dry, ready to recoat and fully cured describe different stages. A coating that accepts a second coat may still be vulnerable to washing, friction, adhesive tape and prolonged contact.

Check the product’s curing guidance and treat the surface gently until it develops its intended resistance. Keep furniture and objects from pressing against soft paint. Do not scrub a mark on a new wall simply because it feels dry.

Start with the mildest care

Use the cleaning method allowed for the finish, testing a discreet area first. Abrasive pads and aggressive cleaners can polish matt paint or damage the film. Durable does not mean indestructible.

Remove as much surplus paint as practical from tools back into a suitable container. Clean tools by the coating maker’s method and keep paint and solvent waste out of drains, watercourses and the ground. Water based does not mean harmless to dispose of.

Leave useful information for later

Label leftovers with the product, colour, finish, batch and room. Close containers securely and store within the maker’s temperature limits, away from children and ignition sources where applicable. Check shelf life and condition before reuse.

Follow Fife Council or your own local authority’s current waste instructions. Do not put liquid paint or solvents in ordinary bins unless the local waste service specifically permits that route. Oily rags can self heat; follow the product’s fire safety and disposal guidance and never leave them piled up.

Common mistakes

  • Scrubbing a fresh coating before it cures.
  • Pouring brush washings into an outside drain.
  • Saving a tin without its finish or colour label.
When to stop and get advice

Follow the safety data sheet for solvent waste, contaminated materials and oily rags. Contact your local waste service if the disposal route is unclear.
