Caring for exterior paint on the east coast
Salt, wind-driven rain and long damp spells ask more of exterior paint. Timely inspection matters more than waiting for wholesale failure.

Inspect little and often
Check sills, lower rails, end grain, joints, masonry cracks and exposed elevations each spring and autumn. Early chalking or a small split is far easier to resolve than moisture trapped behind widespread peeling paint.
Preparation determines longevity
Loose coating must be removed, edges feathered, defects repaired and the surface allowed to dry. Bare timber needs the right primer; masonry coatings must be compatible with the render or stone beneath. Another coat over an unstable surface only delays the visible failure.
Choose for exposure, not just colour
Exterior modern systems can offer excellent durability and flexibility. Traditional lime or mineral systems may better suit particular solid walls and renders. Exposure, substrate and previous coatings should guide the choice.
Plan maintenance before failure
Regular washing, clearing drainage routes and repairing local defects can extend a decorating cycle. A recorded product and colour specification also makes later maintenance quicker, cleaner and more consistent.
