Deck painting · St Andrews & Fife
A deck needs more than colour.
Decking is a horizontal surface that collects moisture and receives regular wear. I assess the timber and previous treatment before recommending a coating, rather than treating it like a fence or a wall.
Discuss deck painting
First, understand the surface.
I check board condition, drainage, biological growth, loose coatings and any existing oil or stain. Damp or decayed boards need attention before coating. Cleaning must be followed by sufficient drying, and the weather needs to suit both application and the return to normal use.
Then, specify the finish.
A product specifically suited to decking and the existing timber treatment is essential. An opaque finish changes the appearance of the grain, while some decks are better suited to a penetrating treatment. I explain the practical differences before specification.
Leave it ready to look after.
Keep the deck clear of accumulated leaves and standing debris. Regular cleaning and inspection help identify wear early. Coated decking still needs maintenance and can become slippery when wet or contaminated.
What needs separate attention
Loose boards, rot and structural problems require repair first. Composite decking is not assumed suitable for painting, and no coating makes a deck permanently maintenance free.

A few practical questions.
The right advice depends on the surface in front of us. These are useful starting points.
Can you paint over old decking oil?
Not automatically. The previous treatment, its condition and the proposed coating must be compatible. A different preparation method or treatment may be more appropriate.
Will painting make the deck slip proof?
No. Wetness, algae and debris can still make a deck slippery. Product selection, drainage and ongoing cleaning all matter, and I do not promise a slip proof surface.
How soon can we walk on it?
That depends on the specified product and actual drying conditions. I provide the relevant restrictions before work and explain when furniture and normal use can return.
