Wood staining · St Andrews & Fife

Colour that keeps the grain.

Staining changes the colour of timber without hiding it in the way an opaque paint does. The result depends on the wood itself, so I assess the surface and test the colour before treating the agreed areas.

Illustrative oak samples showing painted, stained and clear timber finishes

First, understand the surface.

Species, grain, sanding and old treatments all affect absorption. I check whether the timber is bare or sealed, whether marks can reasonably be reduced and how much preparation a veneer can tolerate. A colour shown on another piece of wood is not a reliable match.

Then, specify the finish.

Some stains only provide colour and need a separate protective coating. Other products are complete systems for particular uses. I explain the distinction and choose compatible layers for the timber and its location.

Leave it ready to look after.

Cleaning and maintenance depend on the final protective system, not just the stain colour. Keep the product details and sample record. Natural timber variation will remain part of the finished appearance.

What needs separate attention

Stain cannot guarantee identical colour across different timber species, repairs or previously treated areas. Existing dark colour cannot simply be made lighter by applying a pale stain.

Before you enquire

A few practical questions.

The right advice depends on the surface in front of us. These are useful starting points.

Can you match existing stained wood?

I can assess a close practical match using samples, but timber variation, ageing and previous treatments affect the result. An exact invisible match should not be assumed.

Does stain protect the wood?

Some staining products include protection; others only add colour. The full system must suit wear, cleaning and exposure. I specify any additional protective finish where required.

Can stained wood be made lighter?

Sometimes, but it usually requires more than applying a new stain. Existing colour, timber type and the amount of safe preparation determine what is realistic.
