Wood painting · St Andrews & Fife
Woodwork that belongs to the room.
Woodwork brings the details of a room or elevation together. I prepare suitable timber with attention to the existing coating, joints and exposed edges, then choose a finish for its location and everyday use.
Discuss wood painting
First, understand the surface.
I check whether the surface is bare, stained, varnished or painted, and look for moisture, open joints, resin and loose coatings. Soft or decayed timber needs repair before paint. Older finishes may need assessment before sanding or other disturbance.
Then, specify the finish.
Interior trim needs to cope with handling and cleaning; exterior timber also needs a coating compatible with movement and weather exposure. Sheen and colour are agreed alongside preparation, not separately from it.
Leave it ready to look after.
Allow the finish to cure before cleaning or placing items against it. On exterior joinery, pay attention to lower edges and joints where moisture can gather. I leave product details for future maintenance.
What needs separate attention
Rot, failed glazing details and significant joinery repairs are not solved with filler and paint. Any repair outside the decorating scope is identified before work proceeds.

A few practical questions.
The right advice depends on the surface in front of us. These are useful starting points.
Can varnished wood be painted?
Often, if the varnish is sound and the surface can be cleaned, prepared and primed with a compatible system. Adhesion checks help establish whether the existing coating can remain.
Do you strip all the old paint?
Not automatically. Sound compatible coatings may remain after appropriate preparation. Failed layers need removal, and the agreed scope depends on condition and the intended finish.
Can you use the same paint inside and outside?
Only where the product is specified for both uses and suits the material. Exterior exposure and movement place different demands on the coating, so suitability is checked rather than assumed.
Often considered together.
