Door painting · St Andrews & Fife
Details you see. Surfaces you touch.
Doors take daily handling and bring adjoining surfaces into sharp focus. I prepare panels, mouldings and edges carefully, with coatings suited to the door material and whether it faces a hallway or the weather.
Discuss door painting
First, understand the surface.
I inspect adhesion, previous coatings, open joints and wear around handles. Exterior doors also need checks for moisture and exposed edges. The material matters: timber, composite and metal doors require different preparation, and manufacturer guidance may limit what can be applied.
Then, specify the finish.
Sheen affects both the appearance of a door and how clearly it shows surface defects. I discuss the expected finish, drying intervals and handling before choosing a compatible system. Door edges and meeting points need particular care to avoid sticking.
Leave it ready to look after.
I explain when the door can be closed and handled normally. Fresh coatings can mark or stick before they have cured, even when the surface feels dry.
What needs separate attention
Painting cannot correct significant rot, poor fitting or failed seals. Fire doors and specialist assemblies must retain their required clearances, labels and compatible components.

A few practical questions.
The right advice depends on the surface in front of us. These are useful starting points.
Can the frame be painted at the same time?
Yes. Tell me whether you want the leaf, frame, architraves or all of them included. I record the scope so adjoining trim is not left to assumption.
Can you paint an external door in winter?
Only when the coating requirements and conditions allow it. Temperature, moisture, wind and drying time all matter. A dry looking afternoon does not always provide a suitable working window.
Do doors have to be removed?
Not always. The construction, access, chosen finish and drying arrangements determine the method. Any removal and reinstatement are discussed before work starts.
Often considered together.
