Metal painting · St Andrews & Fife

Protection starts beneath the colour.

Painting metal starts with identifying the metal and the condition of the coating already on it. I prepare suitable gates, railings and other metalwork with particular attention to corrosion, joints and exposed edges.

First, understand the surface.

I distinguish ferrous metal from galvanised surfaces and other materials, then check rust, loose paint and contamination. Decorative coating is not a substitute for sound metal. Thin sections, failed welds or corrosion that has compromised strength need a suitable specialist first.

Then, specify the finish.

Different metals need different preparation and primers. I choose a compatible system rather than using one metal paint for every job. Accessible edges, fixings and joints receive particular attention because coating failure often begins there.

Leave it ready to look after.

Inspect scratches, joints and areas where water collects. Early attention to damage can reduce the spread of corrosion beneath the coating. The product details make future maintenance more straightforward.

What needs separate attention

Welding, structural repairs and replacement metalwork are outside the painting scope. Older coatings may require additional assessment before disturbance.

Before you enquire

A few practical questions.

The right advice depends on the surface in front of us. These are useful starting points.

Can rusty railings be repainted?

Surface corrosion can often be prepared as part of repainting. Deep corrosion or weakened sections need repair or replacement first. I assess the condition before agreeing the coating work.

Can galvanised metal be painted?

Where suitable, yes, but it needs preparation and products compatible with the zinc surface. Ordinary primers are not automatically appropriate.

Do you paint radiators?

Suitable radiators can be assessed as part of metal painting. The finish must suit the operating temperature and the work needs safe isolation and cooling. Plumbing alterations are not included.
