Drywall painting · St Andrews & Fife
A sound start for new walls.
New plasterboard can absorb paint differently across its paper face, joints and repairs. I assess the surface and use a suitable first coat so the finished colour is not undermined by uneven preparation.
Discuss drywall painting
First, understand the surface.
I check whether the surface is bare board, jointed board, skimmed plaster or previously painted. Joints, fixings and repairs need to be sound and sufficiently dry. Side lighting can make uneven joints particularly noticeable, and paint cannot level a badly finished background.
Then, specify the finish.
Bare board and new plaster are not automatically given the same treatment. The first coat follows the substrate and paint manufacturer guidance. The final sheen is chosen with the lighting, expected cleaning and quality of the background in mind.
Leave it ready to look after.
Allow the coating to cure before wiping marks. Keep the finish details for later repairs, remembering that a small touch up can still show in strong side lighting.
What needs separate attention
Board installation, extensive joint correction and full plaster skimming are not assumed to be included. Any further preparation is identified before the painting scope is agreed.

A few practical questions.
The right advice depends on the surface in front of us. These are useful starting points.
Is drywall the same as plasterboard?
Yes. Plasterboard is the usual term in the UK. The important distinction for painting is whether it is bare, jointed, skimmed or already decorated.
Does new plasterboard always need a mist coat?
No. The correct first coat depends on the board finish, any plaster and the specified paint. I follow the relevant product guidance rather than applying one dilution rule to every surface.
Will paint hide uneven joints?
Not reliably. Uneven joints can remain visible, especially in side lighting or with a higher sheen. I identify preparation needs before applying the decorative coats.
