Spray painting · St Andrews & Fife

The method should suit the work.

Spraying can be a useful application method, but it does not remove the need for preparation. I assess the surface, chosen coating and working environment before recommending it instead of brush or roller application.

First, understand the surface.

Access, masking, isolation, ventilation and overspray control all affect suitability. The product must support the proposed application method. Occupied spaces and adjoining finishes need careful consideration, and some projects are better handled using a different method.

Then, specify the finish.

Spraying can give a consistent appearance on suitable prepared surfaces. The underlying grain, joints and defects still affect the result. I discuss the expected finish and record the method as part of the specification rather than promising a factory finish on every surface.

Leave it ready to look after.

Access and handling restrictions depend on the product and working environment. Touch dryness does not mean a finish has reached its full resistance. I explain ventilation, curing and cleaning requirements at handover.

What needs separate attention

Spraying is not appropriate for every product or occupied setting. I only propose it where the necessary controls can be met; otherwise brush or roller application may be the better choice.

Before you enquire

A few practical questions.

The right advice depends on the surface in front of us. These are useful starting points.

Is spraying always faster?

No. Application can be efficient, but protection, masking, setup and cleaning may be substantial. The overall method should suit the job, not just the speed of applying a coat.

Can cabinets be sprayed in an occupied home?

Only where suitable isolation, protection and ventilation can be arranged for the specified product. We discuss disruption and access before deciding on the method.

Will spraying hide imperfections?

No. It follows the prepared surface and can make some defects more apparent. Filling, sanding, cleaning and priming remain essential to the agreed result.
