Wood varnishing · St Andrews & Fife
Let the timber show.
Varnish protects suitable timber while leaving its grain visible. I assess the existing finish, expected wear and desired sheen before choosing a compatible system and the preparation it needs.
Discuss wood varnishing
First, understand the surface.
I check for wax, polish, water marks, loose coating and uneven wear. Clear finishes can emphasise rather than hide sanding marks or colour differences, so the starting condition is important. A sample helps establish how the product changes the appearance of the timber.
Then, specify the finish.
Matt, satin and gloss change how light falls across the grain. Some products also deepen or warm the timber colour. The coating is selected for its intended use, with the specified preparation and drying intervals between coats.
Leave it ready to look after.
Avoid aggressive cleaners and allow the finish to cure before heavy use. Protect surfaces from prolonged moisture and heat. Exterior clear coatings, where appropriate, require regular inspection and maintenance.
What needs separate attention
A clear coating does not conceal deep stains, uneven colour or damaged veneer. Exterior varnishing is only considered where the product, timber detail and maintenance expectations make it appropriate.

A few practical questions.
The right advice depends on the surface in front of us. These are useful starting points.
Will clear varnish change the colour?
It can deepen the grain or warm the appearance. Products differ, which is why a sample on the actual timber is more useful than judging a finish from its name.
Can old varnish be recoated?
Sometimes, if it is sound, clean and compatible with the new system. Loose or contaminated coatings need additional preparation, and an adhesion check may be appropriate.
Can you varnish outdoor timber?
Only where the timber and specified product are suitable. Exposure and detailing affect performance, and exterior clear finishes need a realistic maintenance plan.
