Inland sandstone, market town proportions, fewer salt problems.

Older houses around the Crossgate and Bonnygate can combine tall rooms, original cornices and layers of previous decoration. Inland conditions reduce direct salt exposure, but moisture, frost and the condition of existing paint still matter.

Field notes

What Cupar does to paint.

General guidance for the building types and exposure described here. I check the actual surface, existing coatings and moisture condition before recommending a system.

The stone
Local sandstone in warm greys and buffs, ashlar fronted on the main streets and rubble behind. Some rendered later housing on the edges of town.
The weather
Inland and slightly sheltered, with cold frosty nights in winter and reliable drying in summer. Frost damage to painted stone sills is the usual exterior complaint.
The paint
Breathable finishes still matter on solid walls, but standard high quality exterior systems perform well here. Inside, the emphasis is on plaster repair and getting big rooms to feel warm.
Watch for
  • Frost spalling on painted stone sills
  • Distemper under later emulsion in older rooms
  • Large ceilings needing careful lighting before colour is chosen
  • Traffic grime on street facing woodwork

Two doors down

If you live nearby, we would like to see the house.

Send a few photographs and the rooms or elevations you are thinking about. I review the details personally and discuss the preparation, access and next steps before a specification is agreed.
