Field notes
What Anstruther does to paint.
General guidance for the building types and exposure described here. I check the actual surface, existing coatings and moisture condition before recommending a system.
- The stone
- Rubble stone under lime harl, with crow stepped gables, forestairs and painted margins around doors and windows. Pantile roofs shed water hard onto the wall heads below.
- The weather
- Direct salt exposure on anything facing the harbour, driving rain from the south west and a drying wind that can be an ally or a problem depending on the finish. Harled walls stay damp for days after a wet spell.
- The paint
- Identify whether the harl is lime or cement based and establish what is already on it. Limewash, mineral and other masonry coatings have different requirements. Choose a compatible system for the actual background, and deal with moisture or salt contamination before repainting.
- Watch for
- ·Masonry paint peeling in sheets from damp harl
- ·Rusting iron fixings staining pale walls
- ·Salt bloom under new paint on the seaward gable
- ·Fast drying wind skinning paint before it flows out
