Looking after your paintwork
Exterior walls and render
after we leave.
Rain resistance and full cure depend on the masonry product and conditions. Follow its protection period, then inspect at least annually and after severe weather.
Keep this page. It is what we follow on our own homes, and following it keeps your twelve month guarantee in good order.
The first few weeks
- Keep hoses, pressure washers and ladders off the walls for a month.
- Do not put plants, bins or trellis back tight against fresh paint for a week.
Cleaning
- Once a year, rinse with a garden hose and soft brush. Never a pressure washer on render or harling.
- Green algae on north walls can be treated with a fungicidal wash, rinsed off after.
- Clear gutters every autumn. Overflowing gutters are behind most exterior paint failure.
Please avoid
- Pressure washers. They drive water into the wall and lift paint.
- Plants growing against or up the walls.
- Leaving cracks or blown render unrepaired over winter.
Touching up
Keep a small amount of leftover paint for repairs. Touch up in dry weather above 8°C.
When to check
Walk round the house each spring. Look under window sills, at the base of walls and around downpipes. Send us a photo of anything that looks wrong.
Something not right
Tell us and
we will come back.
If anything cracks, flakes or lifts within twelve months, send a photo and we will look at it. That is the guarantee.
