Looking after your paintwork
Woodwork, doors and skirtings
after we leave.
Gloss and eggshell feel dry quickly but stay soft for two to four weeks. Most damage to new woodwork happens in that window.
Keep this page. It is what we follow on our own homes, and following it keeps your twelve month guarantee in good order.
The first few weeks
- Leave doors propped slightly open for a few days so they do not stick to the frame.
- Avoid putting furniture or the hoover against skirtings for two weeks.
- Water based white trim can feel slightly tacky in cold rooms. Warmth and air will sort it.
Cleaning
- Wipe with a soft damp cloth and a little washing up liquid. Woodwork is tougher than walls once cured.
- Dry it after. Water sitting on window sills is what breaks down paint over time.
- Door edges and around handles get the most wear. Clean these more often.
Please avoid
- Cream cleaners and abrasive pads.
- Draping wet towels over doors or radiators.
- Letting condensation sit on window sills. Wipe it off in the mornings over winter.
Touching up
Small chips can be touched in with an artist brush. Lightly sand the edge of the chip first so it does not show a ridge.
When to check
Check window sills and the bottom rails of doors each year. They wear first.
